About Kali
Kali has more than one naming history. In Sanskrit, Kālī means “the black one” and is the name of a Hindu goddess. In modern English, Kali can instead be a spelling of Callie or Kaylee. The pronunciation and meaning therefore depend on which tradition the name follows.
Different origins
The Sanskrit name comes from kāla, meaning “black.” Written Kālī with vowel marks, it has long vowels that are usually unmarked in English. This is an established religious name with a history independent of the modern English spellings.
English Kali can represent Callie, a familiar form of Caroline or names beginning with Cal-. It can also represent Kaylee, a modern combination of Kay and Lee. Those routes do not yield one shared ancient meaning. Cali, Kallie, and Kalie are related modern spelling choices.
The Sanskrit name also appears as a personal name for men as well as women in South Asian traditions. Its American use, by contrast, is predominantly feminine.
The goddess Kali
In Hindu traditions, Kali is a powerful manifestation of divine female energy, or shakti. She is associated with Parvati, Shiva's wife, and is especially important in Bengal. Her imagery brings together destruction, protection, and the overcoming of ignorance.
Artists often show her with dark skin, several arms, and an extended tongue. Weapons and other fierce attributes express her power against threatening forces. The Metropolitan Museum's nineteenth-century images of Kali place her within a devotional tradition in which a fearsome appearance can accompany a protective role.
Her relationship with time and transformation gives the religious connection greater depth than the image of a goddess of destruction alone. In art and worship, Kali's force can represent the removal of obstacles to spiritual knowledge.
Kali Uchis
Singer Kali Uchis gives the spelling a contemporary musical association. She won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2021 as the featured artist on Kaytranada's “10%.” The award recognized their collaboration, rather than a solo recording.
Her Spanish-language album Sin Miedo (Del Amor y Otros Demonios) received a Best Música Urbana Album nomination for the 2022 Grammys. Orquídeas later received a Best Latin Pop Album nomination for 2025. These projects place the stage name across English- and Spanish-language music and several recording categories.
Pronunciation
The Sanskrit-associated name is commonly rendered KAH-lee in English. Modern English Kali also has the pronunciations KAL-ee, matching Callie, and KAY-lee, matching Kaylee. All have two syllables, but their opening vowels differ substantially.
American popularity
In the United States, Kali was recorded for 660 girls in 2000, ranking #427. Its largest published annual count and best ranking came in 2019, with 1,312 girls at #242.
In 2025, it ranked #323 with 948 girls. There were also 24 boys recorded with the spelling that year. The figures capture all these uses under Kali, without separating the Sanskrit name from the English Callie and Kaylee variants.
