About Alden
Alden comes from an English surname derived from the Old English personal name Ealdwine, made from elements meaning “old” and “friend.” Its American associations include Mayflower passenger John Alden and the romantic story later told about him by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Actor Alden Ehrenreich provides a modern given-name bearer.
Origin and sound
Ealdwine combines eald, “old,” with wine, “friend.” The old personal name became uncommon after the Norman Conquest, but forms of it survived through surnames and later given-name use.
Alden is pronounced AWL-dun, with two syllables and stress at the beginning. The unstressed final syllable makes it more compact in speech than its older three-part source Ealdwine.
Aldwin is a related historical form, and Aldous belongs to the same broader family. Alden's immediate route is through the surname, which preserved the older name after it became less familiar as a personal name.
John Alden and a literary romance
John Alden traveled on the Mayflower and became a member of Plymouth Colony. His surname entered a particularly enduring American story through Longfellow's The Courtship of Miles Standish, published in 1858.
The poem presents a romantic triangle involving Alden, Priscilla Mullins, and Miles Standish. It was written more than two centuries after the Mayflower's 1620 voyage, and colonial records do not document the details of the romance it describes.
That distinction leaves the poem's cultural importance intact while separating it from a contemporary account of the colony. John and Priscilla were historical people; the familiar courtship scenes belong to Longfellow's literary treatment.
The poem's popularity helped make the Alden house in Duxbury, Massachusetts, a focus of public interest and preservation. Alden therefore has an American literary association tied to both a text and a surviving historic site.
Alden Ehrenreich
Actor Alden Ehrenreich played the young Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, released in 2018. The film takes place before the original Star Wars trilogy and follows an earlier stage in the character's life.
The cast also included Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Ehrenreich's role put his given name before a large international audience through a new performance of an already familiar character.
This is a different naming use from John Alden's: Ehrenreich carries Alden as his first name, while the Mayflower passenger carried it as a surname. Both contribute to its modern public familiarity.
