About Damon
Damon is best known as an English form of Greek Dámōn, from a verb meaning to tame. It is pronounced DAY-mun, with two syllables and first-syllable stress. Its stories range from the legendary friendship of Damon and Pythias to musician Damon Albarn's work with Blur and Gorillaz.
A Greek name with a wider modern life
Greek Damon comes from damazo, to tame or subdue. Damian and its international forms belong to a related name family. The English pronunciation uses the vowel in day, followed by a lighter final syllable.
The spelling is also found in Albanian naming, although its derivation in that tradition is less clear. The familiar English form follows the Greek name.
Damon became a regularly used English given name during the twentieth century. It is complete in its own right rather than a routine abbreviation of Damian, even though the two names share an older linguistic relationship.
Damon and Pythias
The friendship legend is set in Syracuse under a ruler named Dionysius. One friend, properly called Phintias and commonly known as Pythias, is condemned to death and asks for time to arrange his affairs.
Damon agrees to remain as a guarantee that his friend will return. If the condemned man fails to come back, Damon will face the punishment in his place. The arrangement turns friendship into a test with an immediate personal cost.
When Phintias returns, the ruler is so impressed by the friends' loyalty that he releases them. The story gave Damon a lasting literary association with trust between friends, independent of the name's literal Greek meaning.
Damon Albarn and two kinds of band
Damon Albarn is a principal singer, keyboardist, and songwriter with Blur. He also co-created Gorillaz with artist Jamie Hewlett in 1998, bringing music into a project built around an illustrated virtual band.
The self-titled Gorillaz debut album appeared in 2001. Albarn's musical work and Hewlett's visual characters made the project different from a conventional group presented only through its performing members.
The contrast between Blur and Gorillaz is part of Albarn's association with the name. One career connects a familiar rock-band setting with a project that mixes recorded music, animation, and a fictional public identity. Damon is the real given name behind both creative settings.
Albarn also released the solo album Everyday Robots in 2014, followed by The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows in 2021. These records add a solo chapter alongside the two band projects.
American popularity
Damon reached its strongest United States boys' ranking and largest annual count in 1976, at #104 with 2,453 births. In 1980 it still numbered 897 boys.
There were 1,044 boys named Damon in 2000 and 604 in 2025, when it ranked #501. Its record shows a strong 1970s peak followed by continued use across later generations.
